One-of-a-kind Cake Designer
How did you come up with the name Sweet Couture?
I wanted something that really captured the creativity of the work that I do. When you think of couture design, you think of something that is totally unique. My favorite cake projects are special and one-of-a-kind. When I played around with the name Sweet Couture, it just felt perfect.
What is your artist background?
I have a degree in graphic of design and art has been a passion as long as I can remember. I’m always up for trying new crafts; I’ve dabbled in jewelry design, painting, and sculpting. Cooking shows like Charm City Cakes are completely mesmerizing to me and when tried baking on my own, I fell in love with the technical aspects of baking and the artistry of decorating. It took on a life of its own.
What is your professional background?
I’ve worked in the service industry for years and appreciate the importance of outstanding customer service. I believe the client should get something better than what they expected.
Weddings, where do you fit in to the couple’s story?
Every couple has a unique story. Sometimes I work with couples where the cake is clearly the most important decision in their wedding planning process and they have a very specific vision. Others know they need a cake but aren’t sure where to start. I’ve also worked with family members and don’t meet the bride and groom until the wedding day! My approach usually starts with learning about their venue, dress, and getting a sense of the details of their celebration. The decisions they have already made can often help me develop a cake concept that they haven’t even dreamed up.
In the beginning I spent a lot of time fine-tuning recipes. I found it helpful to test many, many versions of each particular cake style and solicit feedback from my family and friends—which they were more than happy to do. I’m constantly continuing to develop new techniques like the best methods for creating edible lace or fondant that actually tastes delicious. Sometimes I’m tasked with figuring out how to create a sculpture that rotates, lights up, or defies gravity. For me, the more detailed or technically challenging, the better!
